Electronic document management systems in healthcare are critical as they directly can make an impact on the quality of patient care delivery. Documents are used to serve as patient charts which is a longitudinal record of all patient information with regard to every encounter of the patient with a healthcare practitioner. They are used for diagnostic reports, lab results, medications, and serve as the most important record as well as the main communication vehicle between healthcare providers. In addition, there are many other forms such as for consents, questionnaires, and for billing and management purposes.
Converting physical documents into an electronic format is typically done by office staff, receptionists, file room clerks, or sometimes by the nurses or physician assistants. The problem is that these professionals have not been properly trained in most cases to use the scanners and accompanying software. They often lack the "big picture" to able them to use these systems to their full potential and might make mistakes that impact patient care because of ignorance and lack of training.
The CHDMA training and certification is created to provide document management professionals with an opportunity to advance their skills and learn how the basic scanning technology should be utilized to its full potential. The training is tied to a certification exam so that a professional can demonstrate his or her newly acquired knowledge.
This certification was created by OTech Inc. through an educational grant of the Eastman Kodak company. In the process of defining the certification requirements and accompanying training, a group of industry experts from the healthcare IT field was consulted to form a consensus about the curriculum. We expect to keep this certification current and therefore encourage any feedback you might have about the certification requirements, training and/or exam contents.
